EWTN: "McCain is Not Pro-Life"

EWTN clearly has a conservative tilt. So it is quite remarkable that they firmly assert that John McCain is not pro-life. See it for yourselves.

EWTN "on abortion John McCain's position is not consistent with Catholic teaching"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YTFJPir9BM

Terence P. Jeffrey, Editor in Chief, CNS News Service, interviewed on EWTN:
"On abortion John McCain's view is not consistent with Catholic teaching."
A lot of McCain for President Catholics are in some sort of denial.

I don't think you would find any Catholic that believes John McCain is in line with Catholic teaching but I think he is closer to it that Obama. He is definitely the lesser of two evils.

Therese, you may have a point. But once its clear that McCain's position on abortion criminalization is only marginally better than Obama's, it invites a discussion of the ability to protect unborn through policies in addition to criminalization as well as the many other serious Catholic public policy concerns.

U.S. Catholic Bishop Rene H. Gracida Releases Radio Ad Stating no Catholic can Vote for Barack Obama in Good Conscience

MEDIA ADVISORY, October 24 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today - perhaps in an eleventh hour answer to prayer for the unborn - Bishop Rene H. Gracida has released a stunning radio ad concerning Catholics voting for Barack Obama. His ad is recorded in English and Spanish. Bishop Gracida boldly states:

"This is Bishop Rene H. Gracida, reminding all Catholics that they must vote in this election with an informed conscience. A Catholic cannot be said to have voted in this election with a good conscience if they have voted for a pro-abortion candidate. Barack Hussein Obama is a pro-abortion candidate."

Kurt,

Obamas position is not marginally worse, it is much worse. Go and read the FOCA. It is a horrible horrible law that will mean no State can have any laws against abortion. Partial Birth Abortion will be allowed. A teenager will be able to have an abortion without her parents knowledge. I really encourage you to really look at Obama's laws that he has promised to pass and what he has said about a womens fundamental right. This is not a womens right. It is cold blooded murder. My son wrote an essay against abortion and I have put it on my blog Aussie Coffee Shop. Go and read it and think about why you are still able to vote for Obama who wasn't willing to give basic human rights to a baby in the womb or a baby just born alive from a botch abortion.

Obama is not Pro-life! He is the most liberal senator on abortion and would not vote for the Born Alive Infant Protection Act! Obama said that he did not want to put an additional burden on the women's right to abortion and that he did not want his daughters to be punished with a baby! Please open your heart to Christ to see the truth about how dangerous Obama is to the Pro-life movement!

Before Pope Benedict came to America to celebrate Mass in New York and Washington, it was revealed that as a young boy in Germany he had had a cousin with Down Syndrome. One day a Nazi doctor came and claimed his cousin for the Third Reich. Taken to be “cared for” at the “hospital” young Karl Ratzinger never saw his cousin again: one of the host of “useless eaters” marked for extermination by that brutal regime.

My wife and I operate St. Joseph’s House, a daycare and respite care home for handicapped children. As it happened one of the children we care for, a wheelchair bound young lady, was chosen along with three other handicapped folks to carry the gifts up to the altar before the consecration at the Mass at Nationals Stadium in Washington D.C. on April 17, 2008. One of these was James, a 30ish man who works in the Officer’s Club at Andrews AFB. James has Down Syndrome. He was chosen to carry the large host which would become the Body of Christ lifted up before the assembled. As James with great ceremony advanced toward the Pope, his native enthusiasm overcame his reserve and he started to run. Simultaneously the Holy Father leapt from his chair and walked towards James with his arms outstretched. We have a picture of this moment which I cannot look at without tearing up. What did he see as he gazed so lovingly at James? I believe he saw his cousin. I believe he saw the face of Jesus. And I believe that his great prayer as he elevated that host on that impossibly beautiful day was “As long as you did to these the least of my brethren, you did it to Me.”

The next day April 18th, a boy was born to of all people, the Governor of Alaska. They named him Trig.

Therese--

You have one candidate who is pro-woman's choice and another who is pro-state's choice. Neither recognizes a fundemental right to life for the unborn.

Now, can you defend John McCain's position on Iraq?

Dan,

That was a lovely story. I was there too when the Holy Father offered Mass. It was wonderful to be there and partake in the Eucharist with him.

The triumph of the right wing was a dark day in German history. Let us always strive to keep our democracy and Constitution.

You discredit yourself, with your immediate incorrect statement. Raymond begins by clearly stating that the CHURCH is neither, nor should be titled as "whatever" conservative or ...the Church, is God's Wisdom bridged to humanity. YOU may go with God or against. He loves your freewill so very much, you GET to CHOSE!
...ONE party believes in developing an industry to grow embryos for their parts in stem cell research. One O party does grand scale chosing on their OWN merits and MONIES that cannot actually be accounted for! LEAVE EWTN off your list to crack at... God is watching. For your OWN sake... chose with God's LIFE giving will.

Ideally a candidate would be pro-life and support programs that help impoverished women with "unwanted" pregnancies.

People in this argument seem to forget the basics of the Constitution on how our government works. I learned this stuff in the 3rd and again the 12th grades. Anyone remember checks and balances?

As far as logistics of Congress goes, you aren't going to have enough pro-life politicians in the House & Senate to pass an amendment banning abortion. 2/3 Majority Vote (67 votes in the Senate, not sure how many in the House) - it's not something a VP can break a tie on in the Senate. He/she cannot cast vote number 67. It also needs to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. That's unlikely to happen as well. The best that the pro-life movement can hope for is majority legislation that overturns Roe v. Wade and leaves the choice up to states. At this point, you're still only going to have an insignificant portion of the states banning abortion. And even in these states, a woman is likely to have a neighboring state that is pro-choice, whereby she can cross state borders and terminate the pregnancy.

And then there's always the possibility that the Supreme Court could rule such legislation unconstitutional if a case got appealed and appealed all the way up through the court system. And as far as THAT goes, you're unlikely to have the necessary votes in both House and Senate to support the appointment of conservative judges.

Under these REALISTIC circumstances, the only easy way to reduce the number of abortions is to elect President, Senators and Congressmen/Congresswomen that would advocate the educational and social programs that have been proven effective in limiting "unwanted" pregnancies, uplifting expectant mothers in bad circumstances and fostering adoption programs.

Supposedly, our younger generations are more pro-life than they have been in the past. Give them time and abortions will be likely be outlawed, AND the social programs will be there to support mothers in situations where their child would have been aborted.

God bless!

It is clear that you folks don’t watch ETWN world over. This is just part of story and you on this blog are too lazy to do your own research… well except for some. If you will take the time to go to ETWN.com and World over archive you will find more on the subject that points out that Catholics cannot vote for people like Obama. The comments and stance of both candidates, and it is clear that you don’t want to know what the church has to say.

This will be our last chance if Obama is elected he will select the justices for the Supreme Court. If Obama is elected it is clear that he will appoint justices that are in favor of unrestricted abortions, including late term or partial birth abortion. Those of you who subscribe to or believe that by pursuing efforts to de-polarize the abortion debate and bring Americans of varying ideological backgrounds to the table to find common ground solutions are wrong. There is no middle ground. This is the human rights issue of this time.
If you as a catholic state that abortion is an unspeakable evil, yet you try to say that you can support the candidate (Obama) who supports the extreme view of allowing abortion at any stage of the pregnancy including birth I will submit you logic and your “well formed conscience” is not . I pray that your heart is softened and your eyes are open to this grave illness and that you rethink you view and vote for Obama.

Let us look at the positions of the candidates:

Obama McCain

Embry.SSR Yes Yes
Abortion Yes No
Partial Birth Yes No
Infanticide Yes No
(botched abortions)
DOMA Favors Opposes

As anyone can see Obama is far less consistent with the Catholic Church teaching on matters of intrinsic evil. Do not be deceived by Obama. McCain is not exactly the perfect candidate either but he is much closer to the Church that Obama.

Domestic Social Development Legislation

The USCCB works to apply Catholic social teaching to domestic issues in the public policy arena by advocating on behalf of the poor and vulnerable on a wide range of legislative matters. The USCCB promotes family and child friendly policies, access to healthcare, reform of the welfare policies and addresses issues of poverty including housing and homelessness, hunger, labor and wage concerns. The USCCB works for the preservation of the environment with a particular emphasis on rural life issues. In addition, the USCCB monitors legislation dealing with individual dignity as governed by civil rights laws. We encourage you to visit the web site of the USCCB department of Domestic Social Development for more information.

Legislative Issues in the 110th Congress:

Access to Health Care:

Support legislation to expand health care coverage to the 45 million uninsured Americans; support legislation to improve the Medicaid program.

Assault Weapons Ban:

Support legislation to ban assault weapons.

Children’s Health and the Environment:

Support legislation that would fund research and track diseases to protect children, born and unborn, and other vulnerable populations, from environmental (indoors and outdoors) exposures that endanger their health.

Civil Rights:

Support legislation to address disparities resulting from unjust discrimination and bias in American life.

Criminal Justice:

Support legislation that will assist released prisoners and help to reduce recidivism; support legislation to increase investment in community-based juvenile crime prevention programs.

Death Penalty:

Oppose legislation to expand the death penalty at the federal level; support legislation to limit the use of the death penalty.

Continue support for financial assistance to Church related and other charities as well as incentives for contributing to those entities. (DSD staff will work with General Counsel on “Conscience Protection: Religious Integrity Issues.”)

Farm Bill Reauthorization:

Support full funding of programs, such as the Conservation Security Program, which reward farmers and ranchers who practice good stewardship and environmental protection on land that is in active production; support provisions to target federal payments and other forms of agricultural support to small and moderate-size farms, especially minority-owned farms, to help them through difficult times caused by changes in global agricultural markets or weather patterns that destroy crops; support provisions to protect farm workers in the area of pesticides and other health and safety issues; support legislation to promote rural development, including policies that encourage a wide range of economic, sustainable development strategies; support funding for and improvements in Food Stamps and other nutrition programs.

Minimum Wage:

Support legislation for raising the minimum wage to help full-time workers support themselves and their families.

Social Security Reform:

Therese said...

nice long list you have there Sean. It has made me realize exactly why you are supporting Obama. Bottom line is to have all these rights trump the right to life is simply selfish. If you vote for Obama because you think the economy will be better or because you will have better health policies then you are looking after yourself and denying a basic human right to thousands and thousands of Americans.

It seems to me that many have become desensitized to abortion and what it does to a baby. If Obama was going to sign a law that declared people in wheel chairs would be put to death, would your list of social rights trump their lives too? I put forward this example because people are so desensitized they don't really consider the baby's right to life when it needs to be equal to those that are born rights. If you believe these social rights trump the right to life you are not voting for the good of all. You are voting for the good of some. That is selfish and is not inline with Catholic teaching.

Anonymous said...

Therese,

First of all, thank you for the admission that your original list of Catholic concerns was lacking. I'm glad I could provide you with a fuller listing, though it is not my list but the Catholic bishops'.

Unlike so many conservatives, I'm not looking for what issue "trumps" another. As Catholics, we are not allowed to disregard even a lesser priority for a greater (just as Christ sought the one lost sheep). We are called, as best we can, to stand for ALL of these concerns. I do not disregard the unborn the way many conservatives disregard the Church's position on peace and economic justice.

You are right that we need to educate the public about the unborn. Neither McCain nor Obama hold that a baby's right to life is equal to the rights of those that are born.

Sean,

You didn't answer my question. If Obama was going to sign into law the death sentence for people in wheelchairs, would you still vote for him? He has promised that his first priority as potus is to sign this into law. That is his first priority. The economy and health care are not his priority. The death of infants is.

What good is having perfect health care and a good economy if a group of people are not going to be given the opportunity to be a part of the perfect health care or good economy? This is selfishness at its greatest.

You say you don't disregard the unborn but when you support Obama you do. There is no way you can tell me that supporting Obama is not supporting the death of infants. He has promised to sign into law the FOCA. Have you read this? If not, I urge you too. Remember, this is his first priority

As for your claim that as catholics we are not called to disregard a lesser good for a greater one I disagree. As pointed out the best health care and economy can hardly be good for those that have been killed. Many Bishops and priests have spoken and said we cannot support pro abortion candidates.

McCain hasn't promised to sign any FOCA and he believes that Roe VS. Wade was a bad law. He gives more rights to the unborn that Obama does. While I agree that he is not fully inline with Catholic teaching, he certainly is much closer to it than Obama and therefore the lesser of two evils.

Rhonda --

This is why McCain is losing the Catholic vote and even 1/3 of pro-life voters say they are voting for Obama.

Of course EWTN is horrified. During the primaries, they had their favorites so they presented a statement that McCain was not consistent with Catholic principles to tear him down. Now they are horrified that AN ACTUAL CLIP of theirs is being used in the general election.

Why doesn't EWTN come clean and say that during the primaries, what they broadcast was neither "new reporting" nor "Catholic truth" but political propaganda to be used against McCain in the primary.

How you can call AN ACTUAL VIDEO CLIP a lie only degrades you and your views. Who can trust you Rhonda, when you make statements like that? We have the facts right here. Watch the video clip.

Good point. EWTN shot itself in the foot in their political gamesmanship. The idea that Rhonda would call it a lie when the actual evidence is right here shows how desparate the Republicans are.
