Election Day 2008

"People are coming together around a simple truth - that we are all connected, that I am my brother's keeper; I am my sister's keeper. And that it's not enough to just believe this - we have to do our part to make it a reality"

- Senator Barack Obama, A Politics of Conscience, June 23, 2007, Hartford CT

The day is here. Americans have the wonderful opportunity to elect the leader of our nation. We believe that Barack Obama and Joe Biden present the better option. We will soon see if the American citizenry and the Catholic faithful agree with us.

But, let us remember that in the end, we have four very honorable and decent people seeking the top offices of our nation. Our disagreements with Senator McCain and Governor Palin are on many of their policy positions. There are even some matters where we believe they have the better position than Senator Obama. Senator McCain is a hero to us. He had led a life that has shown great love of our nation. Governor Palin is a true reformer who took on corruption in her own party.

It is a wonderful thing for a free people to govern themselves. America is blessed to have four very patriotic and able people. We are voting for Obama, but whatever the outcome, God has already shown His favor and love to our great country. God bless America. May God preserve the Republic. And may Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the United States, continue to intercede for our native land.

Grant, O Lord, heavenly rest to the soul of Madelyn "Toot" Dunham and may light perpetual shine upon her.

Catholics who voted for Obama, a supporter of abortion rights in all stages, should not present themselves for Holy Communion at the next Mass they attend until they have confessed this sin and made a firm purpose of amendment to sin no more, since voting for a candidate who supports abortion rights when there is a viable alternative was an option for you.

Jesus is merciful, however he is also just and the road to heaven is narrow and many will fail to attain it. If this does not motivate you or bother your conscience, then I guess you really don't care about your own salvation or the babies that are murdered in the womb, the most dangerous place for a child in our country.

I challenge all of you to look into what it means to cooperate in evil in Catholic theology, since you profess to be Catholic. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a great starting point for this discussion.

Please don't pretend to be Catholic and make up your religion as you go along. This is scandalous to the ignorant and dangerous to your own eternal salvation.

I am an American living in Italy and I woke up this morning with a new sense of pride in my country. The Pope congratulated Obama today. He has never spoken a word of the nonsense I've read at this blog. I stopped in at the Shrine of the Eucharistic Miracle in Lanciano, and the people who know me there(friars and others) actually congratulated me. Everyone is happy that we again have an America to love and admire. There are a lot of critical issues that need attention, but Obama is a good man and will be a great President who has a very difficult task ahead of him.

There were more democratic anti-abortion candidates this time than ever before. Certain types of change require grass roots efforts, and again, change will come if people really want it. But we can no longer turn our heads and ignore the grave social justice issues that have been plaguing our nation for so long.

And finally, no one has the right to tell other people when and why they should go to confession! Where is the catholicism in that?

Of course he did. That's his job. He has no choice in the matter. He is a diplomat. I am not. You won't see him in the military either. That does not mean the military is a bad thing.

You will not see me congratulating anyone over this dreadful occassion. Would you have congratulated Mussolini upon his acquisition of leadership in Italy?

All of our enemies are happy about this. What does that tell you?

ANON SAID: "And finally, no one has the right to tell other people when and why they should go to confession!"

Absolutely they do have not only a right, but an obligation to do so. If your friend intentionally murdered someone, do you think it is wrong to tell him that he needs to go to confession????

Let's say your friend is on his own deathbed and you know he hasn't been to confession over the matter. What are you going to do? Stand there and do nothing? What kind of Catholic would you be?

I don't know where you received instruction, but a mortal sin must be confessed. We do not assume the person's conscience (i.e., full knowledge, full consent), but whether or not the act is grave matter.

Do not confuse judging the act with judging the conscience.

Yep. Let's kill all of our "enemies" and not turn the other cheek. Let's pray for that.
