President Obama to be honored guest at Al Smith Dinner

Catholic Right in Meltdown of Rage at Cardinal Dolan’s Invitation

Judie Brown, a right wing activist has demanded that Catholic Charities, known for freely feeding whoever comes to them, give “no dinner for Obama.” According to Judie, “Cardinal Dolan’s invitation to Obama is an outrage.” Others have called Cardinal Dolan “scandalous” and the Right-wing and sometimes racist “Catholic Culture” website fears this will help continue the strong support the President has among many Catholics.

The reaction is further evidence that too much of the Catholic Right is based on hate and extremism.

The Archdiocese of New York has ignored and belittled the critics.

To all my fellow Catholics. Here we have one of the finest institutions for assisting the needy in our country and worldwide for that matter. Now it is being used as polical pawn in the upcoming election. It seems to me that Cardinal Dolan would have the insight to recongnize the implications this invitation could/will have. We all know how the gratest ally the president has is our own liberal media. There has been so much misleading information from both side of the table that I think it would be best if Cardinal Dolan were to change the date of this event to after the election and dismiss the political implications. God Bless America

Yes, we Catholic Right are haters, we hate the sins of the baby killers. You have us pegged!

It does not seem that the Cardinal is giving in to the Right Wing pressure campaign.

And I only wish the Right wing limited its hate to sin and not to people in this fallen world, all of whom are sinners.

God bless America.

Dolan is a disgrace. He is John Roberts in a cassock.

These so-called Catholics (actually right wing fanatics who would have been happier living in Franco's Spain, allied with Hitler) sure seem to be saying that you will know we are Catholic by our many hatreds.

Let's not forget also: Romney to be honored guest at Al Smith Dinner.

As it should be, Loon. I'm proud of my fellow Democrats that we are not leading protests against Romney at this Dinner. Let's have some civility and unite for the higher cause of helping the poor.

Civility? Katherine? What a hoot!

Cardinal Dolan is going to give the benediction at the GOP convention the night that Romney is nominated. I suppose you would see that as giving in to "Right Wing pressure, eh, Katherine?

Dolan should pray there. No one is in need of more prayers than those poor lost souls at the Republican Convention! :)

(assuming the Lord does not send a hurricane there, cancelling the convention! :) )

Cardinal Dolan offered to pray at the Democratic Convention (as well as the Republican). The Dems turned him down. Why? Here was a great chance for them to show the country that they are on good terms with the Church. They badly need to do that. Contrary to Kurt's assertion, Obama is not winning the Catholic vote. The most recent polls show his support among Catholics is only about half (yes, half!) what it was in 2008.

I'll mention again the comments need a name. We indulge "Anonymous" comments sometimes, but don't expect it to last.

The Democrats didn't turn Cardinal Dolan down. He never contacted the Democratic Convention. He made an offer to give a prayer there to a media representative only late in the game after invitations had been made to others. Democrats are not going to disinvite a clergyperson in order to accomodate this.
