CATHOLICS FAVOR OBAMA

In a new poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, Catholics favor Barack Obama over either Mitt Romney or New Gingrich.  In a match up between Romeny and Obama, 48% of Catholics favored the President and only 40% for Romney.  Obama did even better among Catholics if Gingrich were the GOP candidae.  This continues the strong support Obama received from Catholics in the 2008 Presidential race.  Protestants were less inclined to support the President, with mainline Protestants closely divided, 41% for Obama and 43% for Romney.  Evangelical Protestants favor Romney over Obama 60% to 22%.  Members of African American denominations, Jews and others favored the President by strong margins.

Actually in this poll Catholics are slightly more favorable toward Romney than all voters regardless of religion. Catholics 48-40 for Obama, all voters regardless of faith 48-37 Obama.

Interesting since the latest Rasmussen has it tied 45-45 and Gallop has it 48-48 in a head to head matchup.

The bottom line is if most voters, Catholic or otherwise, in November, think the economy is doing well Obama wins, if not President Romney.

Max,

You make a point that this blog and our allies, as well as the many Politically right wing Catholic efforts are all spinning our wheels. Maybe so and both sides should fold our tents and volunteer teaching CCD or at the parish soup kitchen.

If you can get the Right-wing to agree, I'll get progressive Catholics to sign up. :)

Perhaps saying a 'Hail Mary' before voting is a better idea. Think...Protect Religious Freedom - Stop Obama's Health Mandate!

Not spinning our wheels, just not the driving force in why the majority of people cast their votes, or more specifically the 20% of swing voters who decide the election. . I dont bother posting on blogs I agree with. I read your blog to try and understand what the political left thinks, especially the Catholic left.

I personally believe that Obama's position on abortion, homosexuality, and now health care make it impossible for me to even consider voting for Obama. Yesterday on various media outlets, it was reported that Catholic chaplians in the military were forbidden from reading the Bishops letter on the HHS new regulations at Mass.
This administration has violated freedom of religion, and now freedom of speech.

If we were now in the greatest economic expansion in US history I still could not support Obama. If a Romney Administration leads us to a huge economic expansion, I doubt youll be chanting 4 more years.

Was health care not a deal breaker for you until now?

This HHS decision took it to a new level. I strongly disagreed with the individual mandates and the huge expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare. I think the mandates will be found unconstitutional. This latest decision is a direct attack on religious liberties. Then Senator Obama revealed his feelings at a San Francisco fundraiser when talking about the bitter people of Western Pennsylvania, clinging to thier guns and religion. I dont think this administration will stop here. If the Church teaches that homosexuality is a sin will it eventually be declared hate speech? Is that over the top, Military chaplains are already being censored.

My beliefs are held in contempt by the elite in the Democrat Party and the feeling is mutual.

I think that undercuts your argument for religious liberty. if health care is not a right but just a perk some employers choose to offer, then parachurch employers can have their liberty by just not offering this optional perk.

Max said...

Obviously Obamacare does not consider healthcare an optional perk. Employers with over 50 employees have to provide health care insurance or be fined/taxed. I know Kurt thinks this doesnt apply to charaties however everything I have read supports the fine/tax being applied to Charatible Institutions.

When Presidentt Obama was lobbying for the health care bill, he stated if you like your current insurance, nothing would change, and you could keep existing coverage.

The question is was he intentionally lying, or just had no clue on what was in the bill he created/supported?

I agree. If you follow the teachings of the Catholic Faith, You cannot vote for Obama.

He may have had the majority of Catholic votes last time but that was before he had a track record.

I have NO clue how anyone who is a practicing Catholic and in his right mind about right to life can support Obama. How can a Catholic in good conscience support a man who promotes partial birth abortion, abrogates the Church's stand on contraception and promotes gay marriage? To be faithful to the Christ's teaching and the Church requires one to actually live one's faith through the political choices one makes. It's hard and not politically correct. But Jesus didn't take the PC path either.

Coach,

I think that is the problem with so many Right-wing Catholics. They not only personally choose to vote against the President, but they are clueless as to how anyone could possibly see things differently than they do.

This blog's policy is to have respect for Catholics who decide to vote for Gingrich, Romney, Paul or Santorum. It is to recognize them as faithful Catholics with human dignity and charged by God to personal discernment on voting.

We are not clueless as to how a Catholic could vote Republican. We respect them but our discernment and judgment has led us to a different conclusion.

Katherine, as one of those right wing Catholics you are refering to, I touched on what really makes me detest the Democrat Party, the utter contempt the party leaders have for our beliefs.

We are bitter, superstitious, unwashed masses, not sofisticated enough to understand the complexities of the 21st century, clinging to our medevil practices.

The "good Catholics" like Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden, who are pro-abortion,and pro -homosexuality are allowed to maintain leadedrship postions in the party, while the uppity Catholics like the late Bob Casey Sr. who was not allowed to speak at the Democratic Convention, are excluded from leadership positions.

"...the utter contempt the party leaders have for our beliefs."

Well, Max, that is not my experience.

I am against abortion yet hold leadership positions in the Democratic Party.

In moments of frustration with the majority of my Party on abortion I mentioned to my GOP counterpart maybe I should join her Party. The general response was though I may be a nice lady and pro-life, I really wouldn't be welcome because of my vocal support for the Bishops' positions on war, worker rights, poverty and the death penalty.

BTW, the local GOP is A-okay with gay marriage.

Max said...

Lucky your local GOP doesnt have any influence on the national platform or presidential candidates.

Katherine said...

Any influence, Max? You think the RNC will back you up on that?

What was Romney's position on Roe vs. Wade when he running for Governor in Massachusetts in 2002?

Didn't he, during his tenure as Governor, instruct town clerks in MA to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?

Health care? Well, let's see. What was Romney's position back then?

BTW, everybody knows the economy is not doing well for the most part. Most people will vote, however, on the basis of why and by whom they think the economy was driven off the cliff.

Max said...

Just Jake why do you think Romney is having so much trouble wrapping up the nomination?

A cornerstone of his campaign is to overturn Obamacare, I hope we get to see if he'll keep his promise.

Katherine pro gay marriage Republican party officials have as much influence as pro life Democratic party officials-none.
