PRESIDENT TO SPEAK AT NOTRE DAME

PRESIDENT OBAMA ACCEPTS INVITATION FROM UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME TO BE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

President Barack Obama will be the commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame this May, at the invitation of Catholic university. Notre Dame as long been considered one of the premier Catholic universities in the United States. The strong support he received from Notre Dame community was also essential for his amazing victory in Indiana during the November election.

Most people do not consider ND the premier Catholic institution of higher learning. I would probably look to the Ave Maria University, Chrisendom College or CUA.

ND is really just a sports school w/ a Catholic past. No more, no less.

Actually, most people, in fact most Catholics, DO consider UND the premier Catholic university. Most Catholics have not even heard of the first two other schools you mention. And even noted conservative academics like Bill Bennett have admitted regretfully that the image the conservative schools project hurts in attracting quality students.

Kurt:

You really do not know your Catholic schools.

If you look at Chrisendom, it is a school with good student body for a small school, with an excellent reputation for faithfulness to the Magesterium,. just like Franciscan University of Steubenville.

ND, Georgetown, and Trinity College -- only in name, not faithfulness to the Magesterium.

The only people who hurt the image of such schools are those on the radical left such as yourself, who look to tear it down.

Sorry to burst your bubble there Kurt. You want Catholic, you don't go looking to ND, Georgetown or Trinity.

Uh, what's the freshman full time enrollment of those first two schools? What percentage of the grads from those first two schools go on to graduate school?

ND is probably the most recognizable Catholic university. I think the word "premier" is misplaced. ND has some very good qualities and some not so good.

The invitation noted here is an example of the latter.

Not certain what that has to do with the discussion at hand other thant to muddy the waters.

It's "Magisterium," BTW. I bet students at ND can spell it.

A "premier" undergraduate university is distinquished by it's enrollment, average GPA, retention rate, graduation rate, continuing education rate, and/or job placement rate. Care to compare ND to the other schools you've mentioned?

phlojd,

Don't be silly. The goal is not to educate but to indoctrinate the students in right wing politics. That is what makes a university "Catholic!"

Sadly for Republicans ;) Bush43 has done for the Dems what Carter did for the Reps ie lost a generation of young voters to the opposing party.

As I have mentioned previously, all the political trends are in the Dems favor, minorities, younger voters, the older white Rep voters will diminish every (4) years.

Yes Virginia, You can talk about all the small religious schools you want ie Oral Roberts University, Liberty University, Regent University ie Monica Goodling, the totally unqualified Rep lawyer who who was given a position because of political ideology and not her work background ie resume, I digress.

Oh yea, Obama Speaking at ND. It may behoove the Republican party to enter the 21st century, eh.

btw, my mom grew up in the same neighborhood as Ara Paraseghian in Akron, but Ara went to Akron South HS and my mom went to St. Mary's. Why ? because Ara was Protestant, Gasp! not Catholic. Yes Virginia, you could be Muslim lol as long as the football team was successful ie the bottom line, again I digress.

take care, blessings

p.s. St. Mary's merged w/Akron St. Vincent in 1972 to become St. Vincent - St. Mary High School where LeBron James graduated in 2003.

Go Cavs !!!

No, anonymous, what makes a university Catholic is its adherence to the TRUTHS spelled out very clearly by the Church. It has NOTHING to do with politics.

"what makes a university Catholic is its adherence to the TRUTHS spelled out very clearly by the Church. It has NOTHING to do with politics."

Exactly. FUS, AMU, Oral Roberts, Liberty and the other fronts for the Republican Party have put politics above truth.

Wow...when did Oral Roberts or Liberty become Catholic. I must have missed the memo on that one.

Oh..and btw...have you noticed that this blog is really just a posting of what others have written. There is nothing new or original. I guess that is what happens when you follow the party line and are taught not to have any original thoughts.

All of those are Catholic universities, anonymous??? I thought the topic was Catholic universities.

right. Oral Roberts and Liberty are only Catholic for those who think the Catholic faith is all about right wing politics.

Real Catholics have a long standing tradition of academic excellence, scholarship, inquiry. The deep think of Thomas Aquinis rather than the political drivel of Rush Limbaugh.

And you TRULY think that St. Thomas Aquinas would support Obama's abortion policies??? Dream on!

The obvious question would be: nothing new or original? Then why are you here and replying in this thread!

And no Virginia, Democrats/Liberals as a rule don't agree on a lot of issues, it's the Reps who, in the past, were the organized party and in lock step w/whomever their leader was at the time.

And speaking of original. What major political party was the first to nominate a bi-racial candidate out of a primary field which also included a woman and a Hispanic. Then there was the Republican convention where you saw wall to wall Caucasians lol especially many older white guys. So much for inclusion and original.

As Will Rogers said. "I'm not a member of any organized political group, I'm a Democrat!"

How disturbing for the Reps that the party who falls in line got defeated by a young, relatively inexperienced, bi-racial candidate. Sorry, no "Bradley Effect" this time around.

So the party of fear and racism ain't got nothin' left to run on in the future. Time to regroup w/your new leader Limbaugh and all his lemmings ie Boehner, Cantor and Steele ... too funny!

Yes indeed, start praying at the altar of Rush, the family values ?!?, (3) time divorced, prescription drug addicted hypocrite. Yea, that's the ticket to lead Reps out of the wilderness.

Instead of worrying about the leader of the free world speaking at ND, maybe the Reps should worry about finding their own rational leader 'cause Palin, Sanford, Huckabee, Romney, Limbaugh, Billo, Hannity, Coultergeist, Malkin, Beck etc. couldn't find a rational idea or non-hateful, non-racist thought using a road map!

Thomas Aquinis, being a good Catholic, would certainly support Obama's pro-Catholic polices on health care for all, better schools for our children, peace in Iraq, the rigth of workers to organize and assistance for the poor and disabled.

YAY Thomas Aquninis!!!!

Anonymous,

Learn how to spell AQUINAS!!! And you didn't answer my question about Aquinas supporting Obama's abortion policies.

That is certainly an indicator of the sad state of the Catholic Church.
