Democratic faithful tour Ohio citing party values

Obama Faith Tour Reaches Ohio

Effort seeks to spread its message of service to people of every faith

Summit County Councilman Frank Comunale wore a Catholics for Obama button and listened intently as [Pro-life former Congressman Tim ]Roemer described Obama as a man who lives out his faith by what he does.

''I'm a person of faith and in the true sense of Catholic social teaching, Barack Obama and Joe Biden resonate with the things that are most sacred to me — protecting and educating children, instilling them with hope and faith and being zealous about protecting them their whole lives,'' Comunale said. ''When he's elected president, we will have the first community organizer in the White House.''

In addition to Roemer, the tour includes conversations with Catholic Pepperdine University professor Doug Kmiec and evangelical leader Don Miller, who spent time at Kenyon College in Gambier; Denison University in Granville; Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware on Thursday.

  2. You aren't Catholics of the Roman or Eastern Rite. You are phonies who are sucked up by relativism. And, since you think abortion is ok, then I suggest that your mothers should have made their *choice* with you.

  3. The New Messiah.

Guess what? Ya'll are gonna be Islamic Liberal Catholics. They're already naming a new church right here in town. It's called The First Islamic Catholic Church. It used to be called the First Baptist Church, but a bunch of Black Muslims took it over and renamed it. They said they're going to let everyone come to communion--prostitutes, homos, abortionists, and liberal politicians. They're going to have women "priests" as well.

Sorry - sort of off-topic, but sort of not!

  6. Let he without sins casts the first stone.

The Islamic Liberal Catholic church sounds like a wonderful place to be. It seems that they don't judge and only seek to offer salvation to sinners. What good of having a church if you are preaching only to perfect people.

    Churches are made for sinners!

  8. I think some of you would be very happy under Islamic Sharia law. If abortion (and under Republicans it is unlikely to lessen anymore than it would under Democrats) than you should hate Israel and love Saudi Arabia and Iran. For sure Muslim countries do not allow abortion. What about Europe? For heaven's sake, don't travel there. Do you buy anything from China or Japan?

  12. Rustler,

I know that you are hoping that when you post a link we don't go and read them. However, I always go to them because I am open minded like that. All of the blogs that you link to that says that Obama is the messiah or Obama is God are to the right of James Dobson.

As far as the Church being for sinners, tell me: When Jesus was preaching about his Father with whom did he associate? You guessed it, the people that society rejected and did not find worthy.

  13. On another note I came upon some letters written by some Catholics about being told which party best reflects the teachings of the Church http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/opinion/lweb12catholic.html?ref=opinion

It seems that many Catholics are waking up to abortion being held as the boogey man by the right which they pull out every 4 years to make sure we vote for them regardless of their ineptitude and their own moral failures.

  18. Oh, let me continue to smack down your uneducated, name calling posts...(I have TWO bachelors and ONE masters degree - and I'm from Ohio and voting for BARACK!) Listen carefully,

So……PRO-LIFE, right? At least 500,000 Iraqis have been killed during the war in Iraq. Perhaps as many as 4,000,000 Iraqis are now homeless as a result of the war. The infrastructure of the country has been destroyed. Is this pro-life? Be honest in your so-called God-inspired pronouncements, or, better yet, why not keep your rather biased (religiously-bloated) opinions to yourself!

Also, I have had statements made to me such as “come out from among them: or “you can’t be like Christ and be a Democrat”. I realize than many Godly pastors and Bible teachers with good intentions and true sincerity have held ferociously to their beliefs about Democrats for years. Some have pounded the pulpit claiming that abortions in the United States started through actions by the Democrat Party. This offends me greatly because it is simply not true. I have never questioned anyone’s own personal Christian relationship because of where they worship or their political leanings. Now, for Democrats like myself who are also Catholics, it is time to set the record straight.

A 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe V. Wade, legalized abortion by a 7-2 vote. Six of the seven Justices in the majority were Republican appointees. The only Democrat appointee, Byron White, voted against Roe V. Wade.

In fact, in every year since 1969, the United States Supreme Court has been controlled by a majority of Republican-appointed judges. There has not been a Democrat-appointed Chief Justice since 1953.

Currently, there are seven Republican appointees and two nominated by Democrats. Obviously, If the Republican majority has wanted to overturn Roe V. Wade at any time since 1973, the had the votes to do so. Why haven’t they?

In 2003, the United States Supreme Court in Lawrence V. Texas overturned a Texas law against sodomy. Once again, in the 6-3 decision, four Republicans voted to overturn the law.

Recently, the California Supreme Court overturned the State’s ban on same sex marriage. Six of the seven California judges were elected Republicans.

From 2000-2006, Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency. In 2006, the FDA approved an “over the counter” abortion drug known as “Plan B”. The head of the FDA serves at the pleasure of President Bush.

My point is clear. For religious leaders to continue to blame Democrats for Republican actions is wrong.

I can GUARANTEE you that every pro-life person I know does not pull the issue out every four years to use to get their candidates elected. Every one of them regularly participates in Eucharistic Adoration, hold vigils at Planned Parenthood, run fundraisers for woman in troubled pregnancies, etc. etc.

As far as Jesus eating with prostitutes, tax collectors, etc etc.,yes he did. What you seem to forget is that Jesus would always tell them to sin no more. There was always the expectation that they were called to change their lives. ALL SINNERS are welcome in the Catholic Church. BUT they are expected to take on Christ and change their lives NOT continue along the same path. Was Jesus judging them when he told them to go and sin no more???

  35. Marie-Elsie,

Did you deliberately miss my point? Yes, sinners.....sinners who are called to change their sinful behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Kathy,

I did not miss your point being that we have to outreach to sinners in order to convert them to seeing that Jesus is the way. I got it.

However, do you think that you will reach many sinners when you look down on them or treat them like criminals. Don't you think that people who have abortions suffer enough along with their friends and families for their act.

I have watched a person close to me have an abortion despite my pleas to her to keep the baby, despite my assurances that I will adopt or support the baby and take care of it if only she went fullterm. She still had the abortion. I tried to understand her thought process but I was not able to dissuade her.

Am I to repudiate that person or should I be there for that person at her hour of needs. The last thing she needed to hear from me was how unworthy she was for her act. She went on to have more children and is now a very devout Catholic. Do you think that she would have had I or everyone else treated her like a pariah when all she needed after her act was forgiveness and support.

Do any of you for which abortion is the only thing that matters ever even met on a personal level someone who had an abortion. When you do, you then can begin to understand that criminalizing abortion will not eliminate it. It never did. Coming up with programs that educate and thus prevent unwanted pregnancies will.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Marie-Elsie,

You sound like one of the most self-righteous prigs I have ever read. Who in the world ever said anything about looking down on someone who had an abortion? I have NEVER said anything about criminalizing the woman. You constantly make up stories about what people have said in order to make your point. Not logical, Elsie.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kathy,

How can you be so understanding towards women who kill their babies yet full of venom towards public officials that want to use social rather than legal means to promote life? How can you say abortion is murder (a criminal act) yet say you do not want to criminalize women who kill their babies?

I think you past posts contradict what you are asserting now, but rather than search through them, let's start this discussion from a clean slate. Do you have a response?

  42. Actually, Sean, I am MIRRORING the Catholic Church's position toward a woman who has an abortion. Maybe you should familiarize yourself with it.

I am familiar with it. We should be understanding, kind, pastoral with women who have abortions. But you seem incapable of defending the other half of it -- why such kindness towards those directly involved in the act of abortion but so much venom towards those indirectly connected? Why is Barack Obama called a baby murderer but we are restrained by using that language (or law)towards women who abort?

    ReplyDelete
  43. P.S. -- kathy, I'm not trying to bait you. I really would like a serious answer. I'm only leaning towards Obama and would like more information before I vote.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sean,

Roe V Wade was forced down our throats by a Supreme Court MAKING law. That is not the job of the court. Laws are made by the legislature, as I am sure you know. Most Americans did not agree with this law and felt that the Court had overstepped its bounds. This was what really amounted to an edict forced upon a people that didn't want it. Most people at that time looked upon abortion as murder. Many still do.
This issue was the rallying cry for radical feminists at the time and it remains so today. The Democratic party picked up this issue, the support for "choice" and have made it part of their party's platform since that time. Obama just gave a speech in Chicago the other day stressing his total support for Roe. He has spoken repeatedly in front of Planned Parenthood groups and stressed his absolute committment to this "choice." You asked why I have so much venom for politicians that say they want to change the country socially and that will bring an end to abortion. If Obama wants to only do that then why does he continue to speak out on support of Roe v Wade? Why does he say he wants to pass the Freedom of Choice Act? Sean, please, can you not see that he is talking out of both sides of his mouth? There are so many social programs on the books to already help pregnant women in trouble financially, emotionally, etc. I am involved with one such program here in chicago. It must be dealt with legally because, as long as Roe v Wade is law and Obama wants to push it even further into the Freedom of Choice Act, abortion will NEVER end. I am not sayng for one minute that McCain is the answer to our prayers. BUT please, Sean, read everything you can about Obama and his radical support for all things abortion before you make your decision.

Marie, if we arrest and prosecute the doctors, we will. And we don't need to give them much comfort nor compassion. A long, long jail sentence will do them just fine. They can contemplate their sin at leisure. Don't tell me that they are not cold blooded killers.

    Catechism of the Catholic Church:
"1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: 'Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.'"

Since you're not in a position, Rustler, to know whether the latter two conditions are met, you're hardly in a position to consign anyone to hell.

  56. On abortion: abortion has always been with us and will always be with us whether legal or illegal. The goal for any caring person is to greatly reduce the number. Education and outreach including free child care facilities, adoption counseling, and free access to birth contol will all mitigate against abortion. By the way, recent statistics indicate that the largest group of women who have abortions are women who already have a child or children. Will Rustler throw these women in jail? Who will look after their children? Will the father who demanded his conjugal rights and made the woman pregnant also go to jail?

  65. I was searching for more information on the gravity of the abortion topic. The Bishops of the Diocese of Dallas and Fort Worth published and signed a joint letter to help clarify the points on forming consciences. On the topic of other intrinsic evils outweighing abortion they wrote:

“…there are no “truly grave moral” or “proportionate” reasons, singularly or combined, that could outweigh the millions of innocent human lives that are directly killed by legal abortion each year.”

You may read the entire letter at: http://www.cathdal.org/img/Flash/EngFarrellVann.pdf

It seems to reaffirm the quote above.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Other bishops have made different commentaries. But the Texas bishops are correct that a million abortions a year is a very grave matter. That same comment as made in 2000 and 2004. Yet history has proven that electing a Republican president is not the same has stopping a million abortions.

We now know that those who claimed in 2000 and 2004 Catholics must vote Republican to stop a million abortions a year were gravely wrong. If, contrary to the evidence of history, an individual beleives voting Republican in 2008 = stopping a million abortions, they should follow their conscience and judgement. But that would be private judgement and a very debatable one.
