BREAKING NEWS: USCCB BACKS PELOSI HEALTH CARE BILL.
full story in the link:
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops delivered a critical endorsement to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday by signing off on late-night agreement to grant a vote on an amendment barring insurance companies that participate in the exchange from covering abortions.
"Passing this amendment allows the House to meet our criteria of preserving the existing protections against abortion funding in the new legislation," the Bishops wrote in a letter to individual members. "Most importantly, it will ensure that no government funds will be used for abortion or health plans which include abortion."
The Bishops' conclude: "For the Catholic Church, health care is a basic human right."

And the right wing is going nuts!
Isn't this the statement that actually came from "Catholics United" and NOT the USCCB??
Nope.
Catholics United also issued a very good statement in support of the health care bill. But the text above is an exact quote of the Bishops' Conference.
none of that matters anyway Katherine, they pulled abortion to gain the votes they needed. it will simply be put right back in by the senate. or sneaked back in hidden in another bill. democrats will never stop infanticide.
I guess you are free to believe that political analysis as some others believe the GOP is totally insincere about right to life and therefore no one has any moral obligation to support them.
katherine
how very dishonest of you to change the subject. furthermore you assume I am a gop supporter,
trying to deflect the guilt of one by finger pointing at another is a bit childish. democrats would rather die than give up killing childern and you know by hook or crook they will get it back in the bill. please don't assign affiliations to me again.
Having to wait days to see my post or get a reply is very tiring.
I get the feeling you are afraid of everybody.
I don't assume you are a gop supporter. I'm am just noting that you don't have the exclusive right to base your decisions about assumptions regarding events that have yet to happen.
I'm sorry you have to wait for your posts. If if can convince your fellow critics of the President not to try to post obscene, racist and other comments inappropriate in a blog that could be viewed by children, it would allow me to change the policy.
OBAMA’S DOUBLE CROSS ON ABORTION
November 19, 2009
Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the latest developments regarding the health care bill:
On November 15, presidential advisor David Axelrod made it clear that President Obama opposes the Stupak amendment that bans abortion funding in the House’s version of the health care bill. The Senate has just completed its version, and it contains nothing like the language of the Stupak amendment. As reported today by AP, “On a controversial issue that threatened to derail the House legislation, [Senate Majority Leader] Reid would allow the new government insurance plan to cover abortions and would let companies that receive federal funds offer insurance plans that include abortion coverage.”
President Obama, after telling the public that he would not support a bill that provided federal funds for abortion (he was hailed by the bishops for doing so), is now championing a bill that would do just that. Moreover, he is pushing for legislation that the American people do not support: CNN posted survey results yesterday showing that 61 percent of the public is in favor of banning the use of federal funds to pay for abortion; only 37 percent favor it.
In other words, Obama has decided to renege on his promise, betray the bishops and defy the American people. Risky business given that today’s Rasmussen presidential tracking poll shows only 46 percent of voters approve of Obama’s performance. Worse, only 27 percent strongly approve and 41 percent strongly disapprove of the job he has been doing. Wait until the public learns about Obama’s double cross on abortion!
Yes, let's stick to the facts there Kathy...
"What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run health plan. It’s right there beginning on line 11, page 122, section 1303, under “Actuarial Value of Optional Service Coverage.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account – and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services."
Now that actually gives you the line item. Is that enough for you?
I love how you leftists jump right to two lines of attack on those that disagree with you and the left...either
1) You are a GOP lover
2) You are a racist, bigot...blah blah blah...
I am a Caucasian that attends St. Catherine Laboure in Wheaton. Now, if you even knew how to get to a place as lowly as Wheaton, you, yourself might actually experience diversity, rather than blather on about how you embrace it.
I don't care for our Presidents politics nor tactics. In fact I don't really see much difference in him and his crew and the GOP as far as how they operate politically. He just does it with more "charisma". Overall, his ruthless gang and the GOP really just have different ideas they want to force upon us. So I guess by your logic, I am a racist...because I disagree with a black president...such children.
Now, can you flat out say whether you support abortion as a means of BIRTH CONTROL or don't you? Do you fully support a bill that makes you pay for abortions in ANY context?
Let's make it REAL simple for you:
Excepting the danger to the mothers life, rape and incest...
Do you believe that it is OK to get an abortion simply because you do want the child?
Answer carefully, remember, God knows your heart.
P.S. Kathy,
Isn't it an infringement upon my Freedom Of Religion to make me pay for something like abortion that goes against my core beliefs?
And please don't try to throw a Red Herring out there. Of course I realize that I pay for other things such as the death penalty already, but as my mother used to say, two wrongs don't make a right.
I don't see how adding the payment to kill babies because it is a burden on the parents makes things better, in my own, or God's eyes.
Bill Donohue? You got to be kidding. He makes Glenn Beck look sane.
Now, can you flat out say whether you support abortion as a means of BIRTH CONTROL or don't you?
I do not.
Do you fully support a bill that makes you pay for abortions in ANY context?
I don't not fully support such a bill.
Let's make it REAL simple for you:
Excepting the danger to the mothers life, rape and incest...
Do you believe that it is OK to get an abortion simply because you do want the child?
I do not.
That you would pose these questions to me, says more about you than me. You my friend, are part of the reason the pro-life movement is not as successful as it could be.
So based on your answers, we are on the same side in opposition to the proposed Senate healthcare bill. Is that correct?
Lorenzo -
I join you in supporting the House bill. It is too bad the Republicans (except Mr. Cao) are opposed to it.
God bless you.
Stupak bill still doesn't restrict funding of abortions in all cases(rape, incest, etc). I appreciate the fact that it is a step in the right direction for a governmental health care plan. I just don't like the idea of the federal government getting involved as in other countries it has lead to rationing of services. The mammogram circumstance now in the news is one example in which healthcare will be rationed.
I am sorry if I misunderstand you. Do you oppose the senate healthcare bill in its present form?
Lorenzo --
I support the House bill in its present form.
The mammogram circumstance now in the news is not a rationing of health care. It is a statement by a group of medical professionals appointed by the Bush Administration. People are free to take or leave their advice.
THANKS TO THE USCCB
Top 10 Reasons to Kill Senate Health Care Bill
1. Forces you to pay up to 8% of your income to private insurance corporations — whether you want to or not.
2. If you refuse to buy the insurance, you’ll have to pay penalties of up to 2% of your annual income to the IRS.
3. Many will be forced to buy poor-quality insurance they can’t afford to use, with $11,900 in annual out-of-pocket expenses over and above their annual premiums.
4. Massive restriction on a woman’s right to choose, designed to trigger a challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court.
5. Paid for by taxes on the middle class insurance plan you have right now through your employer, causing them to cut back benefits and increase co-pays.
6. Many of the taxes to pay for the bill start now, but most Americans won’t see any benefits — like an end to discrimination against those with preexisting conditions — until 2014 when the program begins.
7. Allows insurance companies to charge people who are older 300% more than others.
8. Grants monopolies to drug companies that will keep generic versions of expensive biotech drugs from ever coming to market.
9. No re-importation of prescription drugs, which would save consumers $100 billion over 10 years.
10. The cost of medical care will continue to rise, and insurance premiums for a family of four will rise an average of $1,000 a year — meaning in 10 years, your family’s insurance premium will be $10,000 more annually than it is right now.
