About the Catholic Initiative Mocked by the Republicans

THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Since its start thirty-seven years ago, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has worked to transform lives and communities, focusing steadily on breaking the cycle of poverty in thousands of communities across the United States. CCHD was established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with a two-fold mandate to fund low-income controlled empowerment projects and to educate Catholics about the root causes of poverty within the context of the Catholic social tradition.

The work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is made possible by the generous donations of Catholic parishioners whose financial gifts in the annual CCHD collection, and at other times of the year, become the tools of self-reliance, self-sufficiency and self-determination for people who are motivated to break out of the cycle of poverty.

No community in the United States has more experience in helping the poor than the Catholic Church. Throughout our nation's history, Catholic Charities have been providing relief and assistance to those in need. With this singular experience with the poor, the Catholic Church determined that a complimentary initiative was needed along side Catholic Charities. CCHD does not run soup kitchens or provide short term aid to those with want. It sponsors long term solutions to break the cycle of poverty. Poor people are involved in initiating and directing CCHD sponsored projects. CCHD seeks to empower poor communities to help themselves.

Last Wednesday, two speakers at the Republican National Convention belittled the work of the Catholic Church and the Church's sponsorship of organizations like the one that hired Barack Obama as a community organizer to work on the South Side of Chicago as the steel mills were closing. Accepting a low paying position as a community organizer for a CCHD project is real evidence of having a "servant's heart."

It's amazing that there can be an entire article about how the CCHB or whatever uses long term solutions to end poverty but never once says what it is that they do.

You're using the Campaign for Human Development to give force to your argumeny?

Beside that, the Catholic Church is constituted of an hierarchical form of government, not a democratic one. As such, the USCCB is a consultative body; the only time its judgments are binding is when every bishop- member votes the same way on a piece of legislation.

Rome has repeatedly stated - and its judgment - unlike the USCCB - is binding under Catholic Law, that there is a hierarchy of moral teaching and that social justice (important to Christ's message though it is) is subbordinated to the right to life.

If you don't like that, and I assume you don't, there are many protestant groups who think of Christianity as a democracy. You need to go join one of them so that you have a chance at happiness. If you remain in the Catholic Church, you will forever be frustrated and angry and disappointed because the Catholic Church has never, does not now, and never will agree with your worldview.

Maybe you are not Catholic so you are unaware of the wonderful witness the Catholic Church is for the poor and how she work for economic justice. There is a link to CCHD to the right which will direct you to detailed information about the Catholic Campaign. Or you can speak with your parish priest or bishop if you have more questions about the Catholic Church and her ministries.

Katherine I must say that your continual misreprestantation of facts is unfortunate for a Catholic. Remember the Eighth Commandment, thou shall not bear false witness? How about the sins of detraction and calumny? Nowhere in Sarah Palins speech does she ever mention the Catholic Church or is she denigrating it. On barackobama.org there is no reference to Sen Obama working for a Catholic organization. The association that you try and make of his working for a non-denominational group which received some funding from the Catholic Church and Sarah Palins comments being anti-Catholic is ludicrous.

What I have presented in factual and accurate. Palin put down Barack Obama's work with laid off steelworkers and others on the South Side of Chicago. My Church, the Catholic Church, does not snicker at the idea of a young man going to work for such a project. It is thanks to my Church that such organizations exist.

My Church does not just seek to help her own members in her social witness. It seek to help empower the poor and marginalized so the can take control of their lives. That is why Catholic Chairty and Catholic Campaign for Human Development serves people of all faiths and denominations.

Baracvk Obama worked for a Catholic Campaign sponsored project. That is a clear and undeniable fact.

KATHERINE: "Baracvk Obama worked for a Catholic Campaign sponsored project. That is a clear and undeniable fact."

And the only fact presented as Sean2 has pointed out. Neither the CCHB nor Catholic Charities truly represent Catholics, Catholic teaching, nor true Catholic social principles. They are full of liberals (i.e., Marxists) and other wacko dissenters. They support Planned Parenthood and homo adoption and you name it.

I could post whole articles pointing out the corruption and subversion of Catholicism by both of those organizations, but there is neither time nor space here to do so. If anyone wants to know more there is plenty of information to be found. Go find it. It shouldn't be too hard.

BTW I will see what I can find and post it in my forum, Lubyanka Prison Riots.

How did I know without ever hearing of the CCHD before that it is a Marxist organization? Just knowing that the USCCB is it's founder told me.

Go here and you'll find out all you need to know about it.

I back Sarah Palin on her refusal to give them any funding whatsoever.

"Note the phrase "working to overcome poverty" -- this is the key element in the CCHD mission and what we're told makes it different from a conventional charity: i.e., poverty relief through almsgiving. Helping the poor overcome their poverty is a noble endeavor, but the CCHD's idea of overcoming poverty seems in every case to be a statist solution: cash disbursements to Left-leaning action groups aimed at redirecting government funds towards their own purposes. Think of this way: you'd be pleased to learn your pastor gave your 12-year-old a part-time job; less pleased to discover that what the job consists in is pestering you for a larger allowance."

When you get to the article go read the comments on it.

From the comments:

To: tiki
I am on the inside of one particular unnamed diocese and have had occasion to see grant submission requests for CCHD funding. If you too would see the BS that groups expect to be funded (and are) you’d be appalled and would never send a dime to any agency operated by the USCCB. I have said many times: “If you thing the sex abuse scandal in the Church was bad, the corruption surrounding the misuse of money would be 10 times worse if people knew how money is being spent.”

Katherine,

Spin it all you want but he worked fof a project that was sponsored by at least a dozen organizations. The fact that he himself doesn't acknowledge that it has any connection to the Catholic Church should tell you something.

I would say I'm surprised that someone "on the inside" of a diocese could come into a discussion among Catholics with a foul mouth and dirty mind. But I've already seen too many Fox News interviews with Bill Donohue, so I've been prepared.

So-called "conservative" Catholics certainly know how to paint a pretty picture of themselves in public.

My question is why do these Catholics have a foul mouth and a dirty mind? Actually she didn't know she was coming here. She's probably used to liberals so her finding you here with the foul mouth and dirty mind is no surprise to her. So what does your foul mouth and dirty mind have to do with this conversation about how corrupt the CCHD is?

I have been in the audience and heard with my own ears Senator Obama acknowledge this.

I'm not sure who you mean by "these Catholics." I'm talking specifically about YOU.

Oh yes you did. You're the one who said "...among Catholics with a foul mouth and dirty mind."

You could only be referring to yourself as you're the one in here with the foul mouth and dirty mind.

Besides, you're grasping at straws again Mr. Political Science Genius.

Keep ranting. You and I have very publicly posted comments in this blog that neither of us have the power to retract. People can read what and they can read what you wrote. Who has the foul mother and dirty mind can be determined by the audience.

The ending of that paragraph should read, "People can read what I wrote and what you wrote. Who has the foul mouth and dirty mind can be determined by the audience." I was actually on the phone with my mother when I typed that comment. I guess the two thoughts got merged together.

Quite right. It is good thought. I support you.
